چکیده

We have developed and implemented a method which given a three-dimensional object can infer from topology the two-dimensional masks needed to produce that object with surface micromachining. The masks produced by this design tool can be generic, process independent masks, or if given process constraints, specific for a target process. This design tool calculates the two-dimensional mask set required to produce a given three-dimensional model by investigating the vertical topology to the model. The 3D model is first separated into bodies that are non-intersecting, made from different materials or only linked through a ground plane. Next, for each body unique vertical cross sections are located and arranged into a tree based on their topological relationship. A branch-wise search of the tree uncovers locations where deposition boundaries must lie and identifies candidate masks creating a generic mask set for the 3D model. Finally, in the last step specific process requirements are considered that may constrain the generic mask set. Constraints can include the thickness or number of deposition layers, specific ordering of masks as required by a process and type of material used in a given layer. Candidate masks are reconciled with the process constraints through a constrained optimization.

Automated modelling of real human faces for 3D animation

This paper describes the automated creation of a textured face mask of a natural person suitable for realtime animation. A 3D surface polygon face mask is used. A set of muscles is defined to animate the mask. The mask is adapted to a real person using 3D surface data from a calibrated stereo sensor. Firstly, the facial features of the mask are aligned to the 3D data by scaling the mask. Second...

Advanced Laser Micromachining Processes for MEMS and Optical Applications

Laser micromachining has great potential as a MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) fabrication technique because of its materials flexibility and 3D capabilities. The machining of deep polymer structures with complex, well-defined surface profiles is particularly relevant to microfluidics and micro-optics, and in this paper we review recent work on the use of projection ablation methods to f...

High resolution micro ultrasonic machining for trimming 3D microstructures

This paper reports on the evaluation of a high resolution micro ultrasonic machining (HR-μUSM) process suitable for post fabrication trimming of complex 3D microstructures made from fused silica. Unlike conventional USM, the HR-μUSM process aims for low machining rates, providing high resolution and high surface quality. The machining rate is reduced by keeping the micro-tool tip at a fixed dis...
